Expressability Family Board Game – Beautiful Thinking

Dear Players,

STORY - EXPRESSABILITY

Expressability play is to encourage what is most endangered: the kind of conversations in which you
listen intently to another player and expect that he or she is listening to you; where a discussion can go off
on a tangent and circle back; where something unexpected can be discovered about a player or an idea
around the personal development theme of the game.
Players take turns drawing a card, reading it out aloud and making an original comment, enabling other
players to join into a hard to stop conversation on route to collecting the four “Harmony” cards and the
seven “Value” cards and telling a real or make-believe story about a value or give an expression of
personal gratitude for someone or something to win the game.
We think the games card subjects are wide and varied and they really bring out the very best from each
player’s mind and heart. The card categories are as follows: Great Thoughts, Kids’ Corner, Science Notes,
Bible Verses, The Rest, Quest, and Question of Life cards.
So if you’re into board games, and you like the idea of making great conversations amongst all ages please
get Expressability for the games table at your place.
We think you’ll love it as much as we do.

Setting the Stage
To commence this extraordinary journey, each participant selects a distinct playing piece and designates a starting Home position on the outermost corners of the Expressability board. Assemble ‘Great Thoughts,’ ‘The Rest,’ ‘Question of Life,’ ‘Science Notes,’ ‘Bible Verses,’ ‘Quest,’ and ‘Kids’ Corner’ cards, positioning them face down on the table.

The Opening Act
Discover Your Pathway to Wellness: Let the Dice Guide You! The first to grace the stage is determined by the roll of the dice. The player with the highest roll becomes the trailblazer. Traverse the outer pathway and amass the sought-after set of four “Harmony” cards on your journey.

HOW IT WORKS

You roll the dice and you land on a “Harmony” square or a “Value” space. You pick a card and read it
aloud then give your own thoughts about the card and then every player can make their comment on the
card and in this way hard to stop conversations begin with this cooperative game. To win you collect all
the “Harmony” and the “Value” cards and tell a story real or make-believe about the use of one of the
values or express what you are grateful for; a thing or a person in your life. And players vote to give their
approval of your expression of self and you may win the game.

The Harmony Square

When you land on a ‘Harmony’ (H) square, it’s time for a Gathering with a twist focused on mental health, meditation, everlasting youthfulness, and even dating. The player on the ‘Harmony’ square gets to choose a card from any pile. Read it silently, then share your thoughts aloud with all players, fostering Expressability’s essence — the freedom to voice ideas, irrespective of age, experience, or status.

Initiate the conversation on the ‘Harmony’ square by sharing your reflections on the card, whether it’s about mental health, the power of meditation, the pursuit of everlasting youth, or the nuances of dating. Others join in, keeping it as simple as A, B, C. This is the magic zone where deep, captivating discussions unfold, inspired by the cards in play.

SERENDIPITY MOMENTS

Expressability started when I was running for shelter in the rain. Two weeks prior I had asked my
subconscious mind to give me a project that would benefit humanity. I wrote down the idea of taking
quotations and ideas by famous people from history and simply having players make their own original
comments about each cards thought-filled idea. For the maze-like playing board, it came to me all of a
sudden and I did a tiny sketch of the maze-like seven-sided board onto a “Great Thoughts” index card that
had a quotation on it.
Next I had a lady architect draw it up into a fully formed playing board blueprint with all the playing
squares.
Next I wanted to make a wooden version so I went to a company who made exotic wood veneer doors to
buy a selection of their wood veneer scraps and without me asking the foreman was happy to make the
playing board for me.
Next I had another another wood craftsman make the tiny goblet playing pieces and two wooden dice.
Then I had another wood craftsman form the playing board into a hinged wooden game box. Then I
handmade the “Value” and the “Harmony” cards.

The first time we played it it was terrific at the creation of conversations we just had to stop so we could
roll the dice again. And my daughter Bonne won the game by us voting for her value story, after she told
of a girlfriend who raised money for victims of an earthquake, also giving away color pencils and coloring
in books to children in the streets of Manilla.
We really believe in the enjoyment the game has to give in its ability to reveal the true nature of a players
ability to think about life in new ways.
Expressability play is time where you have nothing to do but think quietly and talk to and listen to other
players, for without conversation, studies show that we are less empathic, less connected, less creative and
less fulfilled.
